Gentlemen, Start Your Posturing!
The RNC appears to be circling the wagons now in response to the Mark Foley scandal, and it is looking more and more like J. Dennis Hastert has been included in the souls left outside the circling.
Yesterday, the House Majority leader, while voicing tepid support for the Speaker, made it quite clear that it had fallen onto Hastert to deal with the Foley mess late last year.
Roy Blunt, Majority Whip has joined in the whipping of Hastert now, saying that the matter should have been more vigorously pursued, according to the NY Times email edition. That same New York Times article credits the AP with reporting that Blunt thinks "You absolutely can’t decide not to look into activities..." just because the parents of one teen are opposed to it. Apparently there is a greater good at stake.
Sensing blood in the water, perhaps? Representative Jeb Hensarling, Republican of Texas seems to feel that it is better to err on the side of caution, as he joined in on this slowly developing feeding frenzy. Former Chief of Staff to Representative Thomas M. Reynolds of New York Kirk Fordham has now said that Hastert's office was made aware of Foley's behavior before 2004. Citing his proximity to this issue, Fordham has resigned his post at Representative Reynolds office, the chairman of the House Republican campaign committee.
Now, exactly one week after ABC News broke this story, the ethics committee is set to start hearings on this story. Amazing what can happen when you put your mind to it, isn't it?
Now if only these "representatives" of ours could show a little courage and insight before there is political gain to be made from it, we might have a government we could truly be proud of. What we seem to have, however, is a form of government that we could really be proud of if only it's active members actually engaged their brains and consciences.
Those are a pair of mighty big Ifs.
In a month you can do your part to change out the bad blood in the capitol for some fresh new blood. Please do.
