Culture of Corruption, or, Habit of Hypocrisy?
The Democratic Party leadership has made quite a fuss lately about the Culture of Corruption within the Republican Party, and with some good reasons. If you look at the stories surrounding how Tom Delay, Jack Abramoff, Scooter Libby and Randy "Duke" Cunningham all fell from grace in the capitol they all support this view.
Myself, I don't know if there is a Culture of Corruption at the RNC, but there certainly seems to be a Habit of Hypocrisy, the latest example of which is the Mark Foley story.
Mark Foley was a congressman from FLA until recently when he was confronted with some emails and text messages to underage pages which seemed to suggest that he was hitting on them. He apparently resigned immediately, leaving, remarkably, his post as co-chairman on the Missing and Exploited Children’s Caucus. Remarkable in that he was put in charge of guarding that which he sought, apparently, to prey upon.
Since then, the press has been abuzz with the details, as well as the aftermath of his abrupt resignation. Foley's simultaneously abrupt and belated departure could contribute to the coming Democratic Party victories next month, and may well spell the end of another House Speaker as Dennis Hastert tries to convince his colleagues that he did all he could with what he knew.
One sound bite I caught on the radio yesterday trumpeted Mr. Foley's "unequivocal" acceptance of responsibility, which reflects an admirable sensibility, but doesn't stand up to even mild scrutiny.
The congressman was confronted Thursday, resigned immediately, and since then has
Sounds kind of like equivocation to me.
Actually, that seems kind of multi-quivocal. He "did it, but really the alchohol did it, and he is gay," which some people think is cureable (!!) "and he was molested by - clergy - and - you - know - that - has - been - in - the - news - lately - so - it - must - be - true as a boy, so it probably isn't even his fault", seems to be what the party's spin machine wants inferred at this point.
Yay Republican Do Nothing Good Congress. Now, go find a job.
Culture of Corruption? Probably. Habit of Hypocrisy. Certainly.
I wonder how many years it will take the Democrats to develop into the same Arrogant, Self Serving Corrupted Thieves that the Republican House and Senate seem to have become, or perhaps, have been all along?
It's probably time to find out.
